Audit Hours & Continuous Enrollment

What is Continuous Enrollment?

Upon submission of the Proposal approval form to the Graduate School office, a student who has completed all hours towards their degree (check with advisor) but are still working on their dissertation or thesis must remain continuously enrolled until they complete the degree or suspend or cancel their academic intentions.

What are thesis audit (499.01)/dissertation audit (599.01) hours?

After the Proposal Approval Form is filed with the Graduate School Office, and the student has verified with their advisor that they have completed hours toward their degree, the student must continue to be registered each semester. This may be accomplished with one (1) hour of 499/599 or 499.01 / 599.01 until the final thesis/dissertation copies are deposited in the Graduate School Office. This requirement applies to the summer term only when the students expects a summer degree completion.

How does continuous enrollment affect health insurance?

Students registering for less than nine (9) credit hours in fall or spring or six (6) credit hours in summer will not have the insurance fee automatically assessed. Those students must contact the Student Insurance Office before the 15th calendar day of each semester and the 8th calendar day of the summer session to pay premiums. Students are eligible to purchase coverage for no more than four consecutive terms including summer. Students registered for audit only are not eligible to purchase insurance.

How do I register for thesis (499) or dissertation (599) research credit hours?

Students should register for 499 or 599 via STAR (Student Telephone Assisted Registration) or SIAS (Student Information Access System). Tuition and fees will be charged for required thesis and dissertation hours. Students may, within departmental guidelines, take more than the required minimum of 499 or 599.

How do I register for thesis AUDIT (499.01) or dissertation Audit 599.01) hours?

The first time:

Step 1:Student verifies with advisor that they have completed all hours toward their degree.
Student verifies that Proposal Approval form is on file in the Graduate School Office.
Student verifies all financial delinquencies have cleared.

Step 2: Student contact the Graduate School Office, Kim Shennett, 438-2585, and requests to be registered for one hour of 499.01 or 599.01. Students registered for audit only are not eligible to purchase university insurance. If university insurance is needed, students must register for at least 1 credit hour.

Thereafter:

After a student has followed this registration procedure for one fall/spring semester (excluding summer term), the Registration Office will automatically register the student for 499.01 or 599.01 for the following semester until the student completes the degree.

If you take a leave of absence from the University, contact the Graduate School so that your continuous registration will cease.

Summers:

Continuous registration is only required in the summer term when a student completes the degree at the end of that term. When summer degree completion is expected, contact the Graduate School Office to ensure summer enrollment.
